Management has the responsibility to prevent, fix and/or root out whenever possible all illnesses within the organization, three of which (stagnation, greed, and inconsistency) will be discussed here in short. Individual and/or departmental stagnation is an infection which affects about 80% of the working environment sometime during their working career. Excluding mechanical or structural deficiencies, individual output/participation follows a trend from the introduction phase (2 weeks) to the growth phase (1-24 months) to maturity phase (18-52 months) and finally the stagnation phase (36-96 months). Productivity/participation tends to decrease during the maturity phase, and management need to act or put processes into place to inhibit this from happening. Contrary to other economic models, I do not believe in motivation through bonuses or in form of extra remunerations packages for management or employees. Pay should be set for the position, market expectations and the output expected and agreed upon from day one. If employees do not produce as agreed then they should be encouraged to do so, counseled and cautioned if appropriate. If goals are not met then management should take responsibility and take appropriate action to correct the discrepancy/ies. Management should not seed the illness of greed. It only encourages short-term quarterly management practices, back-stabbing and individualistic anti-social activity/ies. It is counter-productive and directly affects the organization’s stability, long-term employment (high turnover), teamwork, loyalty and fosters ill feelings amongst other employees. Inconsistencies in management are also the responsibility of management. Inconsistencies exist due to the lack of guidelines, direction and/or proper leadership in following established guidelines. If motoristsdecided to ignore the traffic signals, what would be the outcome at most heavily used intersections? Management needs to cutout some of the ambiguity, or gray, in the organization. Achieving gray objectives is not the easiest way to go about managing an organization or motivating employees.
