Defense Mechanisms Print E-mail

When one is threatened or stressed, whether it is perceived or real, the natural instinct is to circle the wagons and defend one’s position. All individuals communicate (verbal or non-verbal) these signals through either psychopathologic, psychosomatic and/or behavior means. These signals can include various stress, anxiety, defense and/or other illnesses. Perceptibly, one’s state of mind and current PMP combined with past experiences will directly effect consequent actions and behavior for a given situation. This behavior can be open and productive, aggressive (fight), regressive (flight), closed or isolationist in nature. To lead and motivate people requires that you have some grasp of this subject matter as it will help you to:

1) understand and interpret these signals,

2) to constructively deal with any signals, and

3) to recognize and overcome any negative messages/reactions.

As the saying goes, “for every action there is a reaction” this is very true in leadership. How you as a leader react will cause a sequence of events. Your role as a leader is to proactively identify and take corrective measures.
